ARTIST STATEMENT
Many years ago, God burned a place in my heart for the continent of Africa. When my friend returned from a trip to Mozambique, he sent me a bunch of his photos. The one he took of this little boy immediately captured my heart. He didn’t know the child’s story, but I knew that God did. He wasn’t just a statistic to God. God knew what his laugh sounded like, the things that made him scared and any secrets he had.
I decided to paint him and gave him the name Alasan. While working on this piece, I tried to imagine what his life was like. No doubt, need was a part of his story, which led me to want to play a part in helping children like him. After all, Jesus said, “…to whom much is given…much will be required (Luke 12:48 NKJV).” I don’t want distance to be an excuse as to why I can’t show love by providing food for their empty stomachs and souls. I want to be God’s hands extended, even if an ocean separates us.
All proceeds from “Alasan” help meet physical, mental, and spiritual needs of children in Africa through Africa’s Children. To learn more about their work, please visit www.africaschildrennow.org.
“…and if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” Matthew 10:42
